I LIKE MAKING ADS THAT PEOPLE LIKE

 

Growing up on Cape Cod, I knew summer was coming because the Thompson Clam Bar jingle started playing on the radio. And if I was lucky I'd hear the Pancake Man restaurant jingle too before the DJ came back to play a Kenny Loggins song.

I was most definitely a Toys"R"Us kid. I tried to figure out where the beef was. Drank Pepsi because that was clearly the choice of a new generation which I was a part of. When my mom brought home a jar of Grey Poupon for the first time I thought we had become millionaires.

​

I even spent money I'd earned mowing lawns to buy a giant Bo Jackson Nike poster. I actually paid to hang advertising in my bedroom.

​

But it wasn't until I saw Modernista's Volkswagen Beetle TV spots in college that I thought, "maybe I could do that". Maybe I could make ads that people would like.

​

Since then that's what I've tried to do. Whether as a writer or a creative director leading teams and brands, I look for any opportunity to make something that people will like, that they'll remember. To make something that the younger me would love.​

​

And if I'm lucky, someday I'll make something half as good as the Thompson Clam Bar jingle.
